Ryan, Carrie - The Forest of Hands and Teeth : 320 pages, © 2009

Seven generations after the Return, humanity has lost its history and technology, and instead struggles to simply survive in a world where the undead walk freely, and humans live in safe enclosures.  Mary has grown up in just such a village, protected from the Unconsecrated that inhabit the forest beyond. But Mary longs for something beyond the life she has always known: ruled by the mysterious Sisterhood and cut off from the rest of the world--if there even is a rest of the world. When their village is attacked, Mary and a small band of survivors set off into the dangers of the forest in a desperate attempt to survive.

Red Flags:

Premarital sex occrurs off-screen, but there are some sensual scenes of kissing, etc. that are described; violence to humans occurs, but is not described in graphic detail; violence to zombies also occures, and is described in some detail; the novel has a very creepy tone overall, and may frighten some readers; some characters die or must be executed when infected by the zombie virus; Mary makes some decisions which may be considered selfish or foolish

Readalikes:

World War Z by Max Brooks

Peeps by Scott Westerfeld

The Walking Dead comic series, by Robert Kirkman
