Rosoff, Meg - How I Live Now : 208 pages, © 2004

Fifteen-year-old Daisy is sent to spend the summer with her cousins in England, whom she has never met. She spends idyllic days on their rural farm, and slowly finds herself falling in love with her cousin Edmond. But then The Enemy arrives. An unnamed group invades England, cutting it off from the rest of the world. Daisy and her cousins are separated, and she must try to survive in a world that is wholly changed from what she knew.

Red Flags:

It becomes evident early on that Daisy is anorexic, though, as she is the narrator, she never says this outright.  Some of the scenes of war and violence are especially graphic (at one point Daisy must search through a field of several-days-old bodies to see if her cousins are among them).  Death of animals and pets.  Underage sex and smoking.
