Grant, Michael - Gone

Grant, Michael - Gone : 558 pages, © 2008

One day, without warning, everyone over the age of 14 disappears. Those left behind are lost, confused, and helpless, until some of them start to develop certain powers: the ability to create fire, the ability to float objects, super strength, super speed, etc. But the survival situation has also brought out the more primal instincts of some of the less savory members of the group, and a civil war is in the offing. A mix of Lord of the Flies, X-Men and Heroes.

Red Flags:

Some implied cursing, many deaths of characters (though the dog survives), brutality and violence performed by children to children, children wielding automatic weapons, some very creepy moments involving talking coyotes, and torture (all kids with powers who disagree with Caine have their hands encased in cement and are left to starve at one point).  One character is severely autistic, another suffers from bulimia.

Sequels:

Hunger (coming 2009)

Readalikes:

Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Lord of the Flies by William Golding
