Westerfeld, Scott - Peeps : 320 pages, © 2005

In this science fiction twist on the classic vampire story, college freshman Cal contracts a parasite which turns him into a vampire.  But Cal is just a carrier, not a full-blown "parasite positive," or "peep."  Now it's Cal's job to track down other infected hosts and stop the spead of the parasite.  But the disease is swiftly mutating, triggered by something the world hasn't seen for over a thousand years, and Cal must stop it before the epedemic consumes the world.

Red Flags:

Sex occurs off stage (the peep parasite is passed through sexual contact of any kind--kissing included--but most certainly through sex).  Violence is brief and not very descriptive, but graphic description of peep dens may be disturbing (usually features rats, human skulls, etc.).  Graphic details of the effects of parasites on their hosts are provided in the alternating chapters, which some readers may find too gorey.

Sequels:

The Last Days

Readalikes:

Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld
