Card, Orson Scott - Ender's Game : 368 pages © 1985
In a future where the world is threatened by hostile aliens, children are trained in Battle School to fight in future intersteller wars. Ender is a young military genius who quickly finds the fate of the world resting on his shoulders as he his promoted to the front lines of the inevitable conflict.
Red Flags:
Some readers may be uncomfortable with the violence between the students in this book who, while very mature for their age, are still children. One such incident results in the death of one character. *SPOILERS* Readers may also be uncomfortable with the ending, which involves the genocide of an entire species, and the mental toll placed on a thirteen-year-old. However, this serves to underscore Card's anti-war message.
